Which parts of Canberra are safe for a clueless newbie?

Hey everyone! I just moved to Canberra from overseas and I’m totally lost about which suburbs are okay and which to avoid. I’ve heard people say Belconnen is decent but also a bit dodgy at night? And what about Gungahlin? Or Tuggeranong? I’m living near the city centre for now but looking for a rental. Is Kingston safe? Or Braddon? I saw a cheap place in Fyshwick but someone told me it’s mostly industrial and a bit sketchy. Also, is it true that you shouldn’t walk alone around the bus interchange after dark? I’m excited to explore but honestly a bit nervous. Any tips would be amazing! Cheers!

I see your point about not wanting to waste time, but I'd respectfully disagree with rushing Fitzroy. It's a small but rich area—I spent a good 3-4 hours there on my first visit and still felt I missed bits. The vibe is more about soaking in the street art, cafes, and shops than ticking boxes. Half a day feels right if you want to enjoy it without feeling rushed. Just my two cents as a fellow newcomer!

Mate, you'll be fine on your own in Fitzroy. I did my first solo day there and left about 4-5 hours – that was enough to wander Brunswick St, grab a coffee, check out a few galleries, and have a relaxed lunch. Don't overthink it; just pick a spot and see where the vibe takes you. It's pretty compact and easy to navigate.
