Where do people hang out in Portland? I'm lost!

Hey everyone! I just moved to Portland from China and I'm trying to figure out where people actually hang out here. I went to Powell's Books yesterday (wow, huge!), but everyone was just reading. I tried a food cart pod on Hawthorne, but I felt awkward eating alone. Is there a spot where people just chat? Like, do Americans do meetups in parks? I saw something about Saturday Market—do people go there to socialize or just shop? Also, I heard about the Alberta Arts District. Is that a good place to just wander and talk to strangers? I'm not shy, but I don't want to be weird. Any tips for a newbie? Thanks a ton!

Powell's is great but yeah, people are reading. Try Alberta Street for a more social vibe—lots of cafes, food carts, and patios. Also, check out the Hawthorne District; bars like the Horse Brass or Sandy Hut are friendly. If you're into board games, Guardian Games has weekly events where people actually chat. I actually have to disagree a bit - Powell's is a great spot to meet people if you hang around the coffee shop or attend events. But if you want more social vibes, try Alberta Street for art walks and food carts, or Division Street for bars and restaurants. Hawthorne is also good for thrift stores and casual hangs. Don't give up on Powell's yet, just go during an author reading!
