My landlord just told me my rent is going up by $50 a week starting next month. I've only been here 8 months and I'm in Hamilton near the University. I checked Trade Me and similar places are going for way less. Feels pretty unfair since I've always paid on time and kept the place clean. Is this normal here? Can they just hike it whenever they want? I heard there are rules about how much they can increase, but I'm not sure. Has anyone dealt with the Tenancy Tribunal over something like this? I'd love to hear how it went. Also, if anyone knows a good flat or room for around $200–$220 a week in the Hillcrest or Claudelands area, please let me know. I might have to move if this goes through. Cheers!

If similar places are going for less, you might have a case to negotiate or check with Tenancy Services. But honestly, landlords are trying to claw back costs everywhere.
