I just moved here for work and I'm honestly struggling. I went to a hawker center near Arab Street to grab some nasi padang, and the auntie kept rattling off in what I think was Malay or Hokkien. I tried to ask if she had chicken curry and she just waved her hand at me. Then at the minimart, the cashier barely looked at me when I asked for directions. I get that it's a multicultural place, but I didn't expect to feel this lost. Any tips on picking up basic phrases without sounding like a total fool? I really want to integrate, but it's hard when I can't even order food properly. 😩
