Winters here are no joke — any tips for staying warm?

Hey everyone, I just moved to Ottawa from a tropical country, and this winter is hitting me hard. I thought I was prepared with a jacket and boots, but walking 10 minutes to the bus stop today felt like a survival mission. My ears and fingers were numb by the time I got there. Seriously, how do you guys manage? I see people jogging in shorts and I'm bundled up like I'm climbing Everest. Is there some secret layering technique I'm missing? Also, is it normal for buses to be late when it's this cold, or am I just unlucky? Any advice on staying warm without looking like a marshmallow would be appreciated. Thanks!

If 10 minutes felt brutal, your jacket and boots probably aren't cutting it for Ottawa's winters. I'd recommend swapping for a proper down parka rated for -30°C, like Canada Goose or Mackage (check Kijiji for used ones). Layer merino wool base layers under fleece, and get insulated, waterproof boots with a thick sole. Also, invest in a balaclava and mittens over gloves. Once you've got the right gear, that 10-minute walk is totally manageable.

Oh man, I feel you! I moved from Brazil last year and the first winter was brutal. You mentioned boots—did you get ones rated for -30°C? I made that mistake and my toes were numb within minutes. Also, what about layering? I found that a thermal base layer under a sweater and a windproof jacket makes a huge difference. Any specific gear you're struggling with?
