Feeling lost in translation at Orchard Road shops

Hey everyone, I just moved to Singapore from the US a week ago and I'm already hitting a wall with the language. I was at Ion Orchard today trying to buy a simple SIM card, and the guy at the counter kept saying something that sounded like 'lah' and 'can' but I totally didn't get it. Is that Singlish? I smiled and nodded but felt so dumb. Also at the food court in Wisma Atria, I asked for 'chicken rice' and they asked if I want 'white or roasted' – I panicked and just said 'yes' and got a weird look. How do you even know which one to pick? Any tips for a clueless newbie who's afraid to speak? I don't want to seem rude but I'm so confused. Thanks!

Hey, I get the confusion. I actually felt the same way when I first got here. Katong is nice but not the easiest to explore in a short time if you're new—it's more spread out. For a free afternoon, I'd recommend starting with Chinatown or Kampong Glam instead. They're more compact, beginner-friendly, and give you a good feel for Singapore's mix of cultures. You can save Katong for a return trip when you have more time.

Katong is actually perfect for beginners—it's easy to explore, full of colorful shophouses, and you can try amazing Peranakan food like laksa or nasi lemak at the East Coast Road stretch. It's not overwhelming like the city center, and you'll get a real local vibe. Definitely go for it!
