Hey everyone, I'm a tenant in Bristol and my landlord just informed me that rent will go up by £150 per month starting next lease cycle. The flat has a leaking pipe in the kitchen that hasn't been fixed for months, and the heating is unreliable. I asked him to do repairs first, but he said it's a 'market adjustment.' Is this legal? I'm an international student and don't know my rights. Has anyone dealt with this and successfully challenged it? Any advice on how to approach the council or a tenant union? Cheers!

Totally feel your pain. I had a similar issue in my old place in Easton—landlord tried to hike rent £100 while the boiler was broken for months. Just a heads-up, in Bristol they can only raise rent to market rate, and they have to give proper notice (usually a month if you're monthly). Also, for repairs like that leaking pipe, you can report them to the council's private renting team if they don't sort it. Don't let them get away with it!

First, document the leak with photos and written requests. Then, check your tenancy type—if it's an AST, they need proper notice. Consider contacting Shelter or your council's private renting team for advice. Don't pay extra until repairs are sorted.
