Just got a notice from my landlord in Causeway Bay saying rent is going up by 30% starting next month. I've been here for 8 months, always paid on time, never caused any trouble. He says it's because 'market rates' have gone up, but I checked similar flats on the same street and they're all cheaper. Feels super unfair. Has anyone dealt with this before? Can I fight it? I'm not sure about my rights as a tenant here – any advice would be amazing. Also, any recommendations for affordable flats in the area in case I need to move? This whole thing has me stressed out.

I feel for you, but I respectfully disagree that this is 'out of nowhere.' In Hong Kong, most leases have a 2-year term, and after the first year, landlords can raise rent to market rates. Causeway Bay is prime area; 30% might be high, but it's not uncommon given rising property values. Have you checked if your lease allows this? Maybe negotiate or look for a cheaper flat.

Man, that's rough. I had something similar happen in Wan Chai after just 6 months—landlord wanted a 25% hike 'due to market rates.' I tried negotiating, but he wouldn't budge. Ended up moving to a smaller place in North Point. It sucks how common this is here. Maybe try pushing for a smaller increase or longer lease term?
