Why do people in Leeds say 'ta' instead of thanks?

I've been in Leeds for a couple weeks now, and I keep hearing people say 'ta' when they mean thanks. Is that like a Yorkshire thing or just casual UK slang? Also, I was at the Corn Exchange yesterday and this old bloke said 'ta very much' to the shopkeeper, which sounded proper cute but also confusing. Should I start saying it too? I don't wanna sound like I'm trying too hard, but I also don't wanna be rude. Also, is it just for small favours or can you use it anywhere? Cheers (or should I say ta?) for any help!
