How do locals survive without English in Ipoh?

Hey everyone, I just moved to Ipoh from Canada and I'm honestly struggling with the language barrier. I thought more people would speak English, but at the wet market near Greentown, I tried to buy some rambutans and the aunty just laughed at my hand gestures. 😅 I get that Malay is the main language, but even in shops like OldTown White Coffee, the menu is all in Malay and the staff barely speak English. Is it normal to feel this lost? How do you guys order food or ask for directions without knowing the basics? Any tips for a clueless foreigner? I'm grateful for any advice, even if it's just "learn Malay, lol".

Hey, I get your struggle! At wet markets, just point and smile, then ask 'Berapa?' (how much). Sellers often show the price on their fingers or calculator. Also, learn 'sikit' (little) and 'banyak' (a lot). Most locals understand basic English but are shy to speak. Try the morning market at Canning Garden—some stallholders there speak decent English. You'll pick it up quickly!

Haha, welcome to Ipoh! I get the shock, but locals survive just fine without English here. We use Cantonese, Mandarin, or Malay at wet markets. At Greentown, try pointing or using numbers. Honestly, we locals think it's you who need to adapt, not us. Embrace the chaos!
