My contract is finally up and I'm shopping around. Currently paying 85/month with Bell for 20GB and it feels like I'm being robbed. I see Freedom and Public Mobile are way cheaper but I'm worried about coverage outside the city. Anyone actually using the discount carriers? Is the coverage actually bad or is that just what the big three want you to think?

Canadian cell plans are among the most expensive in the world. Paying 85 for 20GB is highway robbery and yet somehow it's normal here.

The discount carriers throttle your speed during peak hours. Public Mobile drops to 3G speeds at busy times. You get what you pay for — I switched back to Telus for a reason.

The CRTC allowing Rogers to buy Shaw was the worst decision for Canadian consumers. We'll never get competitive pricing as long as there are only three real networks. The 'discount' carriers are just the same companies wearing different hats.
