Good winter tires and where to get them installed?

First winter with a car in Toronto and I know I need proper winter tires. Any recommendations on brands that won't break the bank? Also looking for a reliable shop to do the swap — preferably not Canadian Tire.

If you have storage space, get steel rims with the winter tires mounted so you can swap them yourself each season. Saves $80-100 per year on installation.

Whatever you do, don't go to Canadian Tire for installation. Active Green+Ross or Kal Tire are decent chains. Independent shops in Scarborough are cheaper but you need to book early.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta are the gold standard for Canadian winters but they're pricey. Michelin X-Ice is a great mid-range option. For installation, go to Simply Tire on Finch — they're honest and won't upsell you.
