I've been living in Ponsonby for 3 years now and can vouch for it! The commute to Quay Street is super easy - about 15 mins by bike or 20 mins walking through the park. Your budget should easily cover a decent one-bedroom in a good block.
There's always something happening here, especially on Ponsonby Road. Great bars, restaurants, and the Saturday market is a must. The community feel is real - neighbors actually talk to each other lol. For the ferry - I wouldn't recommend it for daily commute unless you live right near the Devonport or Bayswater terminals. It's more of a weekend thing tbh. The bus network from Ponsonby to CBD is reliable enough. kentralala
Grey Lynn is my pick over Ponsonby tbh. Similar vibe but slightly cheaper rent and way less touristy. I rented a 1br there for $520/week, 10 min bus to CBD. Mount Eden is nice too if you want more of a village feel but the hills make cycling a pain.
For the ferry thing - don't bother honestly. It's scenic but super slow for commuting. Get a car if you're living on the North Shore, otherwise stay closer to the CBD. | ||||
