Lived in both. Shanghai: world-class, international, food scene is incredible, metro is efficient. But expensive and sometimes feels like it's trying too hard.

Beijing: more history, more soul, better art scene (fight me), cheaper, hutong culture is irreplaceable. But the air. Oh the air.

For career: Shanghai. For life: depends on your relationship with air quality. For food: honestly Beijing has caught up.
