Visited Yellowstone in September instead of the summer peak and it was a completely different experience. The crowds had thinned dramatically, the elk were in rut and bugling across the valleys, and the geysers were steaming in the cool morning air. Saw a wolf pack in the Lamar Valley at dawn, watched a grizzly bear fishing in a river, and had Old Faithful almost to myself one evening. September is the secret to Yellowstone. The park is extraordinary at any time but September is special.
