I moved from New York to Montreal six months ago and I have been forced to confront the bagel question. Montreal bagels are smaller, denser, slightly sweet, and baked in a wood-fired oven. New York bagels are bigger, chewier, and more savory. I grew up on New York bagels and I was prepared to be dismissive. I was wrong. The St-Viateur bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese at 7am is one of the best things I have eaten in my life. I am not ready to declare a winner but Montreal is making a strong case.
