Lived in both for extended periods.

Queenstown: more jobs, more social life, better infrastructure. But expensive AF, crowded in peak season, the bubble is real.

Wanaka: smaller, quieter, cheaper. Community feels more genuine. Mountain biking is better. Job options are limited.

For living: Wanaka. For visiting: Queenstown. I chose Wanaka. My only regret: 3 hours to an international airport.
