As someone who has commuted on the A train at 8am for 8 years:
1. The G is always late. Always. Build your schedule around this.
2. Take the 7 train above ground when you can. Fewer sardines.
3. The express vs local distinction saves actual time. Learn it.
4. The Staten Island Ferry is free and has better views than half the tourist attractions.
5. Night subway is sketchy. Keep your head up and phone charged.
6. The best way to deal with the 14th Street shutdowns is to simply not be on 14th Street.
