Made the journey to Studenica Monastery in the mountains of central Serbia and it was one of the most moving experiences of my time in the Balkans. The 12th century monastery is set in a valley surrounded by forested hills, the white marble church is extraordinarily beautiful, and the frescoes inside are among the finest examples of Byzantine art in existence. The monks were welcoming and the silence of the place was profound. This is the Serbia that most visitors never see.
