Visited Komodo Island and the dragons are so much bigger than I expected. We had a ranger with a forked stick as our only protection and the dragons were completely unbothered by our presence. Watched one eat a deer carcass with a kind of casual efficiency that was both fascinating and deeply unsettling. The island itself is beautiful - pink sand beaches, turquoise water, dramatic hills. But the dragons are the thing. Ancient, alien, and absolutely real.
