Was walking past a mosque during Ramadan when a man came out and invited me to join iftar. I was not Muslim and felt uncertain but he was so genuinely welcoming that I accepted. Sat with about fifty people on the floor of the mosque courtyard, broke fast with dates and water, then had a full meal of rice, chicken curry, and vegetables. Nobody made me feel like an outsider. The conversation was warm and curious. It was one of the most unexpectedly moving experiences of my time in Brunei.
