Has anyone hiked the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim?

Planning a rim-to-rim hike for this fall. Looking for advice from anyone who's done it - how many days did you take? Best direction to go? I'm in decent shape but want to be realistic about the difficulty.

I did the South Kaibab to Bright Angel route last spring - took me 3 days with overnight at Indian Garden. Going North to South is supposedly harder because of the climbing but honestly the views from North Rim are incredible. Either way make sure you book your permits way in advance and don't forget water purification tablets. The canyon is no joke even in fall - the heat at the bottom is no joke!
